Bora-Care® is a borate-based product produced by Nisus Corporation, Rockford, TN. Bora-Care® is a borate salt which inhibits the feeding ability of termites and other wood destroying insects. The active ingredient in Bora-Care® is disodium octaborate tetrahydrate (DOT), which is derived from mining operations. Borates are used for many commercial applications from fire retardants to pest proofing insulation.

Bora-Care® can be used to control subterranean termites in structures including Formosan Termites, carpenter ants, drywood termites, small wood destroying beetles such as anobiid and lyctid powderpost beetles, and old house borers.

Bora-Care® also prevents fungus and molds.

The formulation of Bora-Care® is glycol based so that when mixed with water, it can be applied directly to wood and concrete. Since the carrier penetrates the substrate, there is no visible residue on the surface. Similar products will contain borates and they are used in unseen areas only as the products can crystallize.

When properly diluted, Bora-Care® is a clear liquid, just noticeably thicker in viscosity than water. It can be sprayed or painted onto the wood as a preventative treatment or as a treatment when the wood is infested. It can be used in tandem with other types of treatments such as termite baits and liquid soil treatments. It also meets the standards of the Department of Housing and Urban Development for new construction termite prevention. The International Residential Code also accepts Bora-Care® as a treatment for termite prevention. The Southern Building Code Congress has issued an Evaluation Report to building inspectors that the product is effective and acceptable for use. DOT has a low toxicity and requires very little personal protection equipment.

As with all pest control products, Bora-Care® is registered with the EPA, meaning that the product has passed safety and efficacy testing. EPA registration is based upon data submitted from credible testing organizations.
